05 May Local SEO In Pittsburgh: How It Can Help Your Business
At this point in the history of the internet, it has become exceedingly difficult for new national companies to break through and end up on Page One of Google search results pages. (SERPS) I had a client several years ago who discovered that the sector he had chosen (something he was good at and passionate about) was already crowded with national players who would almost certainly outrank him because of their financial clout and their ability to outspend him (and undercut him on prices) not matter what he did. He didn’t have a bad business, but he didn’t have a business model what was going to work on the ‘net — no matter how hard he or I tried.
So what did he do? He went local. He took his same products and services and started to focus on localizing his business to the city and state he lived in. And it worked! He may not be the next internet millionaire, but he is still in business and making money. He also, smartly, found niches that he could exploit. Products that the “big guys” weren’t that interested in.
What I’m really describing here is what is called Local SEO. If your business is located in a defined region, say Western Pennsylvania or even just Pittsburgh, you have a much better chance of improving your SEO, simply because the competition is naturally going to be less intense. Also, we can help you define terms that are related to your business address and service area. This isn’t to say that you don’t have competition from national brands, because the prevalence of big box stores and franchises, which compete in nearly every business niche, are still going to be there. But you have a far better chance of getting on that first page!
How? Well, I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating; serve your customers via you website the same way you would if they had come into your store. (assuming that’s your kind of business) If you have deep and broad knowledge about say, lawn and garden equipment, then make absolutely sure all of that information is on your website, with blogs, videos, Q & A sections and lengthy, accurate product descriptions. Just like you, your customers are looking for ANSWERS. Website design, particularly in an increasingly mobile world, is far less important. People want to find a quick answer to their Google query. If you can supply that information, you stand a much better chance of ranking higher.
