23 Feb Google Guts The Gutter
Here’s an interesting move by Google, as reported out of Search Engine Journal.
[themify_box style=”rounded black comment” ]“Google has officially started rolling out an update to its paid search layout. Starting today, Google will begin phasing out the right hand gutter (sidebar) ads. Instead, Google will only show 1 – 4 ads above the fold and force the rest to the bottom of the results page.” (from Search Engine Journal)[/themify_box]
What does it mean? First off, it helps people who are ranked high in traditional organic results. Secondly, it will likely increase the cost of Google AdWords, as people will bid-up the price of those top 1-4 spots. This means that national advertisers will likely come to dominate those ads at the top, at least that’s what people are thinking.
And that is also probably why Google did this; to increase revenue. These moves happen a lot, and nothing is forever, but it really points to traditional SEO and organic results being more important than ever.
